24 Reasons to visit ‘De Witte de Withstraat.

Our favourite street. ‘The Witte de Withstraat’, just a short walk outside the busy shopping area.

Various architectural styles characterize this street. In the 1970’s a bad reputation because of bad cafes and gambling houses. In the 90 ’s the street underwent a metamorphosis. Currently, the street is the place to be, trendy bars, many restaurants, art galleries, and museums.

At evening the street is one large terrace. A street that you should definitely visit at your stay in Rotterdam. I have a lot of great addresses to visit:

24 Reasons to visit ‘De Witte de Withstraat.

Museum Boijmans. Art with a big A, Frans Hals, Picasso and Salvador Dali.

It’s the combination of contemporary art and the old masters that intrigues me. Upon entering Boijmans van Beuningen, a world renowned museum, the first thing that attracts the eye is the modern, innovative wardrobe. The museum packed with millions of euro’s of art, is almost more famous for the way you can hang your coat. On weekdays it’s wonderful to walk around. Not to busy. So thats why I decided to make thursday museumday. It’s a little me time. There is this somewhat undefinable peace and quit in this place, which is wonderful while looking at Frans Hals, Picasso and Salvador Dali. Alongside the basic collection of art, Boijmans regurlarly organises new exhibitions. Like the original work of Salvador Dali. For more than two hours I walk around and order myself a cappucino at the bar looking out on the famous rose garden. Boijmans is art with a big A.

The Sonneveld House Museum. Time travel to the early 30s;

The Sonneveld House Museum in Rotterdam is one of the best-preserved houses in the Nieuwe Bouwen style, the Dutch branch of the International School of Modernism. It was designed in the early 1930s by the architecture firm of Brinkman & Van der Vlugt, also known for the Van Nelle Factory and Feyenoord Stadium. They were also responsible for the extraordinary interior, in close collaboration with W.H. Gispen. At the Sonneveld House Museum visitors can experience what it was like to live in a hypermodern home in 1933.
A striking aspect of the house is the way Brinkman and Van der Vlugt designed not only the architecture but also the complete interior. For the furnishings, they selected mainly furniture by the designer/manufacturer Gispen and fabrics by the firm Metz & Co. The Sonneveld House is probably the first example of an early modern interior where the products of these companies were applied consistently. The house was moreover equipped with the latest household gadgets to enhance the domestic pleasure of its inhabitants.

Museum Kunsthal Rotterdam. Its one big hall full of art.

De Kunsthal opened its doors in 1992. The building, by design of the famous Rem Koolhaas, is a 3300 square meters exposition area. The construction mixes wood, marble, steel and concrete. Not a square inch in the building is the same. The expositions vary. From James Bond to famous drawings, cartoonists or the great old painters. When ordering a drink, take a closer look at the bar. Its completely made out of one concrete construction. A museum freak? De Kunsthal is situated nearby Boijmans and the Natural History Museum. I always enjoy the parc after a visit and with good weather you can find me at the pond of the Rose garden. Who knows I might spot a rich handsome doktor of the Erasmus Mc.

Parma ham, a great Gorgonzola or fresh pasta. A great place to do your Italian shopping. Feeling hungry, than order a freshly made pizza. No time to cook? Two Years of Travel By painting of a landscape or memory In a Moleskine Notebook

Two Years of Travel By painting of a landscape or memory In a Moleskine Notebook

You are planning to make a journey, discovering or study in new countries/cities, or wil visiting undiscovered dream locations, you meet interesting people, enjoy the local culture and the food. Of course, your iphone, and your digital high tech camera ready to shoot images.  But it can be on a different way,  you’re painting all your experiences during your trip!  Not using a painting easel but you taking with you a number of Moleskine books and paint all your experiences!

On my search for travel stories I came across the website of Miss Missy. Wow! What a beautiful way to visualize your travel experiences. She has painted daily during her journey. What could be more beautiful than putting on your experiences on paper with ink, brushes and paper!

Each page is a painting of a landscape or memory embellished with handwritten descriptions.

Missy is an American painter working with acrylic ink on paper. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Painting and Material & Visual Culture from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010. In 2013 she was awarded a Fulbright Research Grant for Painting in Turkey where she studied Anatolian textiles and learned how to weave traditional kilims and knotted pile carpets.

For nine years she has painted in Moleskine journals with acrylic ink. Each page is a painting of a landscape or memory embellished with handwritten descriptions. She combined two most recent journals into one book entitled Standing in Asia, Looking at Europe, Thinking of New York.

One hundred illustrations guide viewers through a journey beginning in 2013 when she moved from New York City to Istanbul for one year, followed by several months spent in villages in central Turkey and Morocco. Along the way the artwork explores broader themes of memory, nostalgia, and the blending of one’s inner world with the external world.

Award winning

In 2014 she was awarded a John Anson Kittredge Educational Grant to extend her research abroad. She has attended artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center (2011), Babayan Culture House of Cappadocia, Turkey (2014), Cafe Tissardmine in the Moroccan Sahara (2014), the Taft Nicholson Center in Montana (2015) and AARK in Finland (2016).

Missy’s paintings have exhibited national and internationally. Washington, Chicago, Berlin, Zurich, Istanbul and the UK. Missy is represented by Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont.

Futuristic architecture, inspired initiatives such as inner-city canal surfing, a proliferation of art, and a surge of drinking, dining and nightlife venues make Rotterdam one of Europe’s most exhilarating cities right now.

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016 contributor, Tom Hall, said, “Rotterdam is bursting with modern, post-modern and contemporary construction and offers a veritable array of art, top-class restaurants and atmospheric nightlife, making it one of Lonely Planet’s must-see destinations for 2016.”

Ballroom dancing?

‘…. Great balls of fire..’

Ballroom dancing? Its gin and tonic with balls. At Ballroom, the trendy new place at the Witte de With you get the best gin-tonic and really good meatballs. Its a not so typical combination of bar, dancing and restaurant. So don’t expect a three course meal but more bar and fingerfood and as said terrific (Spaghetti)meatballs and some other variations of this old and world famous dish. This place seems to push all the right buttons that seems to fill quickly after 23:00. I enjoyed my smoked salmon balls and I am off to enjoy the night. www.ballroomrotterdam.nl

We all live in a yellow submarine

We all live in a yellow submarine

It’s innovation at its best. At the RDM Campus is where it happens. Finding new ways of creating energy, the manufacturing of real Rotterdam style scooters and the testing of a floating forrest in the harbour. The RDM campus once was the industrial site where ships were build and more importantly submarines for the American en English navy. After the shipyard closed it remained silent at the site.

The RDM campus once was the industrial site where ships were build and more importantly submarines for the American en English navy.

Till the local government, the Port of Rotterdam, decided that it was time to put the place back in business. Now a combination of students, wizzkids and entrepreneurs can be found daily at the large halls. If you want to have a business meeting; book one of the old, still original, boardrooms. But the best thing is the large hangar where once the submarines where build. No a place where beautiful shows are held. For example the show by Conny Janssen attracted thousands of visitors. You can reach the Campus by car but of course it is much more fun to take the water taxi of hop on the ferry that brings you to the other side.
