Moving to Rotterdam and finding an accommodation?

Accommodation in Rotterdam

Rotterdam, with a population of 620,000, is a dynamic and flourishing city in South Holland in the Netherlands around one hour away from Amsterdam. With a growing expat population, hordes of international students and a refreshing lack of tourists, Rotterdam is more international than most cities with as many as 51% of the population being expatriates or foreign students. Finding Rotterdam apartments to rent can prove rather tricky.

Rotterdam’s city centre is alive and vibrant. Is This Europe’s coolest city?

The Netherlands has a new face for architecture and design and it’s all in Rotterdam. Having been devastated by bombings in World War II, much of the last century was spent rebuilding, renovating and redefining Rotterdam’s aesthetic and culture. Impressive modern architecture and a vibrant international character has ensured Rotterdam’s inclusion in the New York Times and The Rough Guide’s must-see cities of 2014. Rotterdam’s city centre is alive and vibrant, thanks to several initiatives that focus on bringing residents and expats to Binnenrotte, Market Hall, Grote Kerkplein, and Coolsingel.

Local cuisine mixes a wealth of flavours, with Spanish bars and Italian restaurants alongside Chinese bistros and Surinamese canteens. The city centre is attractive, with a focus on entertainment and shopping as well as lush green parks. Many expats and working professionals are looking for apartments for rent in Rotterdam, and whether you are in need of student housing in Rotterdam or interested in fully furnished apartments,

Rotterdam is like Disneyland for architecture geeks.

You should always arrive in Rotterdam by train. That way, as you leave the station, you can turn around, as I did last month, put your bag down and look back at one of the most joyful buildings in the world. It’s the most exuberantly designed transportation hub since architect Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center at Idlewild Airport (later renamed JFK). Rotterdam Station soars, ignoring gravity, a balletic leap captured in steel, glass and wood.

Het Industriegebouw, a Rotterdam icon, located in the ‘Hoogkwartier’ district, a fast upcoming area, with many new shops, cafes and restaurants.

The building is an icon of the rebuilding of Rotterdam. Realised in post-war Rotterdam, designed by the legendary architects Hugh Maaskant in collaboration with Willem van Tijen.

Het Industriegebouw is a unique community driven business building. You can find tech start-ups to architects as well as your favourite gift shop and breakfast spot, everything you need under one roof.

Here you’ll find a lot of newly opened and interesting shops and restaurants like Groos (the best gift shop and gallery with all things from Rotterdam), Old Scuola (better pizzas than in Naples), Alfredo’s Taqueria ((Authéntica Comida Mexicana) and By Jarmusch (the all day breakfast dinner).

Its official. To be build soon. The new residential complex ‘De Zalmhaven’ The highest building of the Netherlands

The new residential building complex ‘De Zalmhaven’ is developed by AM & Amvest on a site adjacent to the onetime port of Zalmhaven, center of Rotterdam. The project consists of a total of approximately 450 quality apartments located in a skyscraper (designed by Dam & Partners) as well as two mid-rise towers (by KAAN Architecten).

The 220 units by KAAN Architecten are built over a large parking. A public park occupying the former harbour that closed after the construction of the Erasmus bridge, marks the North-West boundaries of the complex.

Two shifted towers of 70m each sprout from a solid plinth, offering astounding views over the river and highlighting the access to the building.
Combining both urban and local scales, the complex presents a more stately and formal façade overlooking the city in the North side, while meandering balconies characterize the South front, introducing a more private and intimate dimension.

A transparent grid façade relates to the traditional surroundings and binds the various elements of the block together in a unique and recognisable system. The towers include a wide range of apartments in different sizes, while the plinth comprises of units with rooftop gardens or directly relating to the surroundings on the ground level.
