Two Years of Travel By painting of a landscape or memory In a Moleskine Notebook

You are planning to make a journey, discovering or study in new countries/cities, or wil visiting undiscovered dream locations, you meet interesting people, enjoy the local culture and the food. Of course, your iphone, and your digital high tech camera ready to shoot images.  But it can be on a different way,  you’re painting all your experiences during your trip!  Not using a painting easel but you taking with you a number of Moleskine books and paint all your experiences!

On my search for travel stories I came across the website of Miss Missy. Wow! What a beautiful way to visualize your travel experiences. She has painted daily during her journey. What could be more beautiful than putting on your experiences on paper with ink, brushes and paper!

Each page is a painting of a landscape or memory embellished with handwritten descriptions.

Missy is an American painter working with acrylic ink on paper. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Painting and Material & Visual Culture from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010. In 2013 she was awarded a Fulbright Research Grant for Painting in Turkey where she studied Anatolian textiles and learned how to weave traditional kilims and knotted pile carpets.

Book

For nine years she has painted in Moleskine journals with acrylic ink. Each page is a painting of a landscape or memory embellished with handwritten descriptions. She combined two most recent journals into one book entitled Standing in Asia, Looking at Europe, Thinking of New York.

One hundred illustrations guide viewers through a journey beginning in 2013 when she moved from New York City to Istanbul for one year, followed by several months spent in villages in central Turkey and Morocco. Along the way the artwork explores broader themes of memory, nostalgia, and the blending of one’s inner world with the external world.

Award winning

In 2014 she was awarded a John Anson Kittredge Educational Grant to extend her research abroad. She has attended artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center (2011), Babayan Culture House of Cappadocia, Turkey (2014), Cafe Tissardmine in the Moroccan Sahara (2014), the Taft Nicholson Center in Montana (2015) and AARK in Finland (2016).

Missy’s paintings have exhibited national and internationally. Washington, Chicago, Berlin, Zurich, Istanbul and the UK. Missy is represented by Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont.
